carless in the canaries

After a month away from social media mid-January finds us back in The Canaries. We’re in Puerto Del Carmen on Lanzarote, the most northerly of the islands.

We had decided to fly from Edinburgh rather than Glasgow – to save £100. A few days after booking I started having negative thoughts about driving to Edinburgh in the early hours of a January morning. “Sod’s law there’ll be a foot of snow”, was my thinking. So we booked The Hilton airport hotel for the night before and said goodbye to the £100 flight saving. We have an Ioniq EV and I decided to top up the battery at Ingliston Park and Ride, for our return journey. Now I probably had enough charge to get back to Glasgow, but the range does take a hit in cold weather, especially if you have the heating on. Ingliston was a mistake. Ingliston was a farce. Ingliston was broken. Faulty chargers, apps not working, locked electric cables – every EV driver’s nightmare. I’ll leave it at that.

Now to the Hampton by Hilton.

Pluses: friendly check-in and a decent enough room.

Minuses: the check-in/lounge/dining area/restaurant is a barn of a place and not that welcoming – or warm. The food was dreadful – you’d think that with a small menu you would get something half decent. Think again. Bar prices were a rip-off. £5.40 for Tennent’s lager is pushing it.

I’m not a lover of Edinburgh airport. It’s bit DIY having to load your own baggage after you check-in. The Jet 2 experience was fine again. We were delayed slightly as the plane had to be de-iced, but we arrived on time and our private transfer was seamless. Yep, private transfer as we haven’t hired a car for this break. Masks on bus time again.
