the golden mile

(beyond 4)

In Las Americas, you can find the area known as The Golden Mile, which has many luxury brands who benefit from the low taxes in The Canaries to sell their products at cheaper prices than elsewhere. Among them, you’ll find Escada, Luxury Jewellery, Armani, Versace, Dolce e Gabbana and all the usual suspects.

Apologies for this extract from a tourist website.

tenerife – day 5

The hire car has been returned. I need to reserve judgement on the experience as we have another couple of days booked at the end of the trip. The car had 102,000km on the clock, and if you want to physically see the workings of an Italian gearbox, then this is the car for you. Having said that, all I want from a hire car is that it’s well maintained and that it’ll get you from A to B, even if that takes a bit longer than usual.

So, we’re on foot (or bus) for the next ten days or so. Today we are heading towards Las Americas, to the Golden Mile. We plan to go via Los Cristianios old town and return along the sea front. The name ‘Golden Mile’ gives the impression that Blackpool Pleasure Beach is suddenly going to loom large in front of you when you least expect it. It’s quite the opposite and if you fancy some Cartier merchandise you’re sorted.

We walk down the Golden Mile to the sea front. It’s breezy, the Atlantic waves are big and the surfers are out in numbers.

This is roughly the half way point and time to make our way back on the paseo. We’re hungry but there’s not a lot going on in the food scene until we get to Playa de last Vistas. Fortunately we spot ‘Friends’ which has been recommended. It’s busy, which is usually a good sign. And it’s good. The food is tasty, the portions are generous and it’s cheap.

Back to walking. It’s hot now, 26 degrees in the shade, roasting in the sun, but despite it getting to be bit of a struggle, we’re on the home stretch. Through the tunnel and we’re at Los Cristianos harbour. The Fred Olsen ferry is manoeuvring into berth as we pass.

17,966 steps later we’re back at the apartment. Never has an ice cold Dorada tasted so good.
